9 - Tommy and Jody Shelton

Flagstaff, AZ

“Tommy, did you get your extra boots?” Dad called from down the hall.

“No,” Tommy called back. “I don’t need any extra—”

“Get your extra boots!”

Tommy could tell by his tone not to argue. Ever since they started packing up, Dad had hardened up and everything he said meant business. Mom just became more and more upset, the more they gathered things into the living room and Dad ordered everyone around.

Reaching into the bottom of his closet, Tommy grabbed his hiking shoes and, using the laces, tied them onto the outside of his backpack. Dad had told him that it was okay to wear his sneakers now, but he needed to be prepared with boots in case the high school didn’t work out—whatever that meant...

Mom had packed his clothes, and Tommy was a little upset that she wouldn’t let him take his robot t-shirt with him. She picked other clothes that he didn’t care as much about. Now, she and Jody were in his sister’s room, stuffing clothes and other things into her little, pink school backpack.

The boy heard his little sister crying and arguing.

“No, honey,” Mom said. “Just Twi-li. That’s it. You don’t have room for any others.”

When Tommy had permission from his dad, he took his revolver and carefully wrapped it up into one of his shirts, then put the gun and the bottle of bullets into his pack.

At one point, when Mom was still working with Jody and stacking the rest of their things and a few suitcases next to the couch, Tommy followed his dad outside onto the front porch.

“Tommy, what are you doing?” Dad asked, looking back at him.

He had changed out of his security uniform, and was now wearing hunting pants and a thick, brown shirt. The sleeves were rolled up to his elbows. His work hat was on his head, a dark blue cap with a silver eagle on the front.

“I wanted to see,” Tommy said.

“Come here.”

Tommy walked over to his dad and leaned up against him. He felt the man’s heavy arm drape around him, and his thick hand grasped Tommy’s shoulder.

Out on the street, there were a few groups of people—families—walking together to the north, up to the school several blocks away.

They were just like Tommy’s family—wearing backpacks, rolling luggage behind them, clustering tightly together and mostly walking up the center of quiet Sitgreaves Street, the neighborhood almost silent. All of the cars parked in the gutters were dead and forgotten.

“What’s gonna happen, Dad?”

“I don’t know, boy,” he replied. “But we’ll take care of each other. And you...” he said, looking down into Tommy’s eyes. “Your job will be to take care of your sister, you hear?”

“What about Mom?”

“She’ll take care of Jody too, son. But your mom is very upset. I hate to see you going through something like this as young as you are, but I have a bad feeling, and it’s time for you to man up and watch out for Jody.”

Tommy looked back out to the street and watched three children following behind a couple of grown-ups.
